Summertime and swimming go hand in hand and unfortunately the number of ear infections
increase in children. The middle ear - a small place between the inner and outer ear contains three delicate bones that are
important in hearing. Air pressure is kept constant by the auditory tube which leads into the middle ear from the back of
the nasal cavity. When bacteria or a virus invade the middle ear, inflammation and a buildup of fluid (hallmarks of a middle-ear
infection) result.
Symptoms include acute stabbing pain in the ear, which is often indicated in a baby by prolonged
crying while rubbing or tugging the ear. Some discharge may occur, fever and general fussiness especially if the child already
has a cold and temporary hearing loss. Untreated middle ear infections can lead to complications and some of these could be
severe. Contact a physician immediately if symptoms occur.
He/she will examine the ear to determine if an infection
is present and will prescribe appropriate treatment, most likely an antibiotic. Middle ear infections are among the most common
childhood illnesses, with half of all children having at least one episode.
